Volunteering

Last summer I wrote a post about how my local community food shop works HERE Today I had my first online induction session to join them as a volunteer in the fabulous work they do to make sure as much food as possible doesn't go to waste. ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€

I've volunteered to work a few evenings a week to drive the above van (it's electric!) round the supermarkets and collect their excess food that would otherwise go to waste.  Sometimes it's a few crates of fruit and veg, sometimes it can be as much as 20!!  On today's FB page they've just posted they have 12 frozen ducks available for collection tomorrow (bring your own bag!) ๐Ÿ˜‚ Last Friday they had 6 large birthday cakes. ๐ŸŽ‚ No questions asked, if you can use it up you can have it.

I also learned about the various small local community food groups that prepare free meals/food to distribute to families.  One of them operates in my school's catchment area so I hope to get involved with them too.

Really excited and looking forward to my next induction day on Friday where I'm going to the hub to see how all the projects are run. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

  1. Great stuff - we have the same scheme here in our wee town, the Community Fridge is open most days. I've not used it yet, but it's there if I need or want to. Well done you :)

    1. Thanks! They started with one Community fridge, then another one. Then they needed some freezers and the whole thing just grew and grew in to the huge project it's become :-)

    2. Freezers here too - and when they get a large amount of things, they cook and share; usually on a Sunday morning - free sausage in a roll etc. Great initiatives - grass roots, no "authority" interference. Long may they continue :)

  2. Can't stand the thought of food going to waste when people are hungry. Good on you for getting involved!

    1. Me too! Throwing out perfectly edible food is such a waste when I know families in my school that struggle to feed their kids
