Pretty sure I know!

Silver Lab

Luna is an unusual colour for a Lab.  Silver Labs were rare but they're becoming more common.  Basically they're a colour mutation of the chocolate gene.  She looks like a pale chocolate but has silver streaks and her undercoat is silver.

Weimaraner

I've had several people including good friends and a dog trainer (!) tell me she's definitely part Weimaraner.  I get it, they look similar especially as she's still a long legged and skinny Lab puppy.  And the colouring is similar. But nope she's definitely a pure Lab!

Vizsla

Today I had a lady ask me if she was a Vizsla.  Again I can see the resemblance but the colouring is very different.  They're more a fox red colour.  She even asked me if I was sure she was a Lab!!  Pretty sure I know my own dog's breed.  And I have the Kennel Club paperwork too!

People are weird.  I'd never go up to a complete stranger and tell them what their dog 'really is' 🙄

  1. Wow-how Luna has grown! People really are so rude sometimes and would be offended if you did it to them. Catriona

    1. Yep, she's 8 months old now and probably full height. But she'll fill out in the next year and become the typical Lab shape. I just think it's a weird thing to tell someone what breed their dog is, in their opinion!! :-) xxx

    1. They're gorgeous dogs and yep, they do look a bit wolfish. But do they really think you'd be walking a wolf in public on a lead?? LOL! :-) xxx

  3. Gosh Ali, Luna has grown and is gorgeous and the her colour is stunning🙂. I had my first Rhodesian Ridgeback in 1978 and there were so many people who asked me ‘how has your Labrador got such a nasty scar on her back’, trying to explain her breed back then was exhausting and as you say they will tell you what the dog ‘really is’ - so rude on all levels. 1. She's a very pretty girl but wild!! The thing that gets me is that Labradors are a really easy breed to identify as they're so common. How can they be confused with a Rhodesian Ridgeback or a German Shepherd??? When I say she's just a Lab I can see folk don't believe me. It's rude and annoying! :-) xxx

  4. We have a 10mth old big black show type lab. Last week I was asked if he was part Rottie as they'd never seen a lab that looked like ours!

    1. Male and female Labs do look a bit different from each other as they mature. Luna is definitely of the show type (longer nose, finer featured face) But to say he looks like a Rottie?? Sounds like they're just playing a guessing game for their own entertainment!! :-) xxx

  5. Well, I wouldn't know the difference between any of them, to be honest, but what beautiful creatures they all are. xx

    1. I think it's absolutely fine if someone doesn't know what she is, just ask and I'm happy to explain. I wouldn't be able to identify types of cat breeds as I've never been around cats. But I'd ask their owners for information. I wouldn't just say 'That looks like a Siamese to me!' (although I do know what they look like!!) :-) xxx

  6. She is a very pretty dog. I don't know why people would suggest she is a different breed, just plain rude and dumb.

  7. Yes I've come across this too - years ago I was out on a walk with our yorkies, a lady passing by said in very ringing tones " that's a strange dog, look at his long legs!" Quick as a flash I replied " oh yes, he's a 'Junior ' Yorkie " naughty of me, but the lady in question had no more to say......

  8. Oh, I've had a few people tell me how lovely my French Bulldog is, when I say 'she's a Pug' they usually respond with 'Are you sure?'. Yep, I'm pretty sure and she always has been a Pug. Everyone seems to think that they are right about everything they say these days.

    1. It's the 'Are you sure?' that really annoys me!! Of course I'm sure. Do they really expect you to say 'Oh no you're quite right, I've not known what my dog is all these years.' Pffft!!! :-) xxx
