Weird layout!

I rather like quirky and weird houses.  And the bungalow I'm really really interested in has a very weird layout.  One bedroom is off the lounge and the other is off the dining room.  It has the original 1970s pink bathroom (!) and someone has built on a porch/new entry with a full shower room.  Neither bathroom is anywhere near a bedroom.

I've got a viewing appointment next week (there are no viewings until then) so the timing is good for me to get this house ready.  I've read the home report very carefully and it needs a lot of work.  New windows, new kitchen, new bathroom, loft insulation, new boundary fence etc etc  It's been owned by the same person since 1972.  That's why it's in my price range.  It would be a huge project.  But I won't know if it's worth it until I see it.

Just for fun, how would you reconfigure the layout on a budget? My first thoughts are knock through the kitchen into the dining room creating a larger dining kitchen and build a new wall to create a new entry into the second bedroom.  Then knock through into the pink bathroom to create a master bedroom with en suite.

Or knock through the kitchen into bedroom 1 to make it the dining kitchen.  And turn the dining room into a bedroom.  Ooo, the possibilities!!

Huge thanks for all the positive vibes!  I really appreciate it. Keep them coming 😊

    1. The second option would get rid of the bedroom off the lounge issue!! I might hate the house the minute I step inside but it's fun to explore the possibilities without the responsibilities! :-) xxx

  2. I also like the 2nd option as it removes the need to enter the 2nd bedroom through the lounge.
Old neighbors of mine in the UK bought a ‘weirdly’ (I’m sure it made sense when it was first built!) laid out bungalow and completely revamped it to their design. It was hard work but totally worth it. They shopped around for cut price windows, kitchen cabinets etc., and found builders who were between jobs to cut down on labor costs.
I’m really looking forward to following your journey wherever you decide to move!

    1. The second option would mean I wouldn't need to move the water supply to the sink/washing machine as it is cheaper to keep the plumbing in the same place or need to move electrical sockets. I could reuse the mirrored wardrobe doors in the bedroom off the lounge for the newly created bedroom. Even building a wardrobe to fit the doors. That would save money! Good tip on using builders between bigger jobs!! :-) xxx

  3. Another vote for the 2nd option, thereby removing the need to access a bedroom from the lounge. I love trying to figure out how things might look with some juggling around. Lynda xx

    1. I can't believe the house was built like that. Someone must have changed the layout at some point but why?! I love watching Kirsty Allsop in Love It or List It come up with a plan to change the layout in the featured house so they'll love it! :-) xxx

  4. What an interesting layout. I think the second option would be the one I lean towards.

    God bless.

  5. The second option is good but do not take the wall all the way along just take it far enough to put a door opposite the existing bedroom door and that will give you an alcove in the bedroom where you can build in wardrobes

    1. Yes, after I drew that line I was thinking the same thing. And then I might be able to re use the wardrobe doors from bedroom 1 :-) xxx

  6. Another vote for option 2. I see you've drawn in a new hallway as well. Are you thinking that would let you convert the garage in future? 🤔

    1. That is a possibility! I did wonder if that was a way round the bedroom situation :-) xxx

  7. Isn't it fun playing with plans. I would go for option two of the two you have done up to now ... but I bet there are other options.

We are planning on buying a bungalow based on it's outer footprint and redesigning the inside completely, even if it means taking down all the walls and starting from scratch. Our next move will be our last move so it makes sense to get it as good as we can. Alan is planning on spending the first year of his retirement sorting everything out. I see lots of poring over plans in our future.

    1. That sounds exciting and a bit scary! At times I do wish I had a partner to do stuff like that with me but then I remember I'm happy with my life as it is now!! :-) xxx

  8. I would remove the wall between kitchen and bedroom 1 to make kitchen diner. Block door from bedroom 1 to old lounge - this becomes bedroom 1. Dining room becomes lounge, then either leave door from new lounge to bedroom 2, or block door and remove cupboards in rec.hall to make new door to bedroom 2. That way both the kitchen/diner and lounge could have views/access to garden (obviously depends on what the views might be). I moved into a bungalow 14 years ago and immediately swapped the bedroom (which was at the back of the property) with the living room (which was the front) and then had french doors put in so I had direct access to the back garden. When my neighbour found out she said it had never occurred to her to do that but it annoyed her that she couldn't see the back garden in the summer so she swapped rooms too.

  11. I like #3 that would let you turn the bedroom off of the lounge into the new dining room. The current dining room would/could be the new 2nd bedroom with a barthroom added in that dead end hall and opening into the 2nd bedroom. Hope that shower room can open into the font bedroom. It's food for thought!

    Wishing you well!
