Cost of a day/ night out

My son and his girlfriend (who are currently living with me to save money for their house deposit) had a rare day/night out yesterday.  They had a lovely time and were full of chat about what they did.

Today my son told me how much their day/night out cost them.  And frankly I was shocked!!!

They got the train into Edinburgh and went to Murrayfield to watch the rugby, Scotland against Japan.  The tickets were a gift from his dad so were free.  But thanks to Covid rules and security measures (!) they weren't allowed to take in any bags, food or drinks and there was nowhere available to store bags.  Luckily they knew this in advance.  But they were shocked that a 500ml bottle of water was £4 (just over $5 US).

After the match they went for a meal at Bella Pasta, a decent chain restaurant and not too pricey.  They had a meal and a few drinks then they came home.  I had driven them to the train station and picked them up so they didn't need to pay for a taxi.

The total spend for their day/night out was just over £130!!! About $175 US 😲😲😲

That seems like an awful lot of money for a trip into the big city to see a sports event with a bog standard albeit nice meal and a few drinks. Or am I so anti social and out of touch with the cost of going out???

Since lockdown March 2020, I've been 'out out' twice.  Partly circumstances and partly choice.  And I'm not planning on changing that any time soon either!!

  1. Imagine what it would have cost if they had had to pay for the tickets and taxis back and forth to the train. How the "other half" live I suppose! I've only been out to eat twice since the beginning of lockdown in March 2020 but have had a few take outs and meals with family - much cheaper!

    1. Yes, also had plenty of take aways and a few family meals at home or in garden (depending on rules at the time!). Cheaper and healthier!!

  2. Costs have risen so very much I am not at all surprised at what their evening cost.

    Drinks are very expensive.

    God bless.

    1. It seems soft drinks cost as much as a beer now. I know pubs/restaurants need to make a living but it feels like it's a huge increase!

  3. I think that's shocking, I really do. It just reminds me of one reason why I don't go out all that much.

  4. Murrayfield should be ashamed. That's outrageous profiteering on a bottle of water that would have cost them a few pence. I can understand the rules about taking stuff in, but if you're going to have them then the price of non-alcoholic drinks needs to be fair.

That said, I hope they had a really good time.

We don't go out much either. Between the hassle, having to consider whether others will behave considerately, and the cost - it all seems too much bother.

    1. They did have a good time! But I agree there's an element of profiteering with a captive audience by saying it's because of Covid/heightened security issues.

Many of us at school have pulled out of our planned Christmas night out as we're just not sure how safe a party night will be in a local hotel. No point being safe at work to then risk it on a night out with people who might not behave considerately

  5. We had a family meal out at a local pub the other day. The bill without drinks was £46.... for all six of us. The food was lovely too so we will definitely go there again. I've seen places where £46 would barely cover the cost of one meal. I'd rather fill my pantry with groceries than pay silly money for a meal out.

    1. That sounds like my kinda pub!! And yes, I'd rather fill my store cupboard with £130 worth of staples that would last me for months!

  6. We very seldom eat out in the UK because of the price. We are in Spain at the moment after our walk we had a couple of hours to wait for the bus back so we had lunch out salad Small steak chips and veg followed by ice cream, a large bottle of water was included but we also had two glasses of wine each total for 2 €28.
