I need the bones!

My car was booked in for a service yesterday.  So once I'd dropped it off at 9.30am, I walked into town to M&S before walking home.  About 2.5 miles in total.  I had my backpack on and I just took my time.  I coughed a wee bit and had to stop and blow my nose a few times 😂 Luckily it was cool and dry and I really enjoyed the walk.  My youngest son took me back to the garage later so it was just one way.

I had a £4 voucher for M&S.  I wanted to get some chicken so was delighted to see chicken legs were £1.20 for 600g.  I got 6 good sized legs for my £2.40.  I also got some reduced eggs (£1.30) and garlic/ginger/chillies (60p/47p/£1) to start a batch of fire cider.  Chicken legs were flung in the Crockpot for 4 and a half hours on High.

Fire cider is so easy to make and is full of the good stuff to help ward off colds and flu.  My version is onion, garlic, chillies, lemon, ginger, rosemary, thyme and raw organic apple cider vinegar. I kinda use THIS recipe from my friend Mel.  You can add or leave out stuff.  The rosemary and thyme were from my garden 😊  Once it's been sitting for a few weeks I'll strain it and add the raw honey. Then it's ready to use!

When the chicken legs were cooked I stripped the meat off (just under 600g) and put the skin and bones back into the Crockpot with boiling water to make stock.  I did look longingly at the chicken breasts in the shop but my main thought was 'I'll not get any stock from them without bones!'  Everything needs to give me as much value as possible!

  1. Our car will have its first service tomorrow and my walk will bring me back past Lidl. The good thing about walking is it cuts down the amount I buy! Catriona

    1. That is so true!!! I was walking past the big Lidl at the time they normally put out the £1.50 veg boxes. There was no way I'd be able to carry one all the way home!

  3. I never knew you could cook baked potatoes in a slow oven. That's on my list now,

    1. It tastes like a cross between a microwaved and an oven baked potato. Sometimes the potatoes on the bottom are a little crispier where they touch the bottom of the Crockpot if you leave them long enough

  4. Love the look of that firecracker cider and can imagine that it's very useful for colds/flu
They seem to have stopped doing the veg boxes in our local Lidl- shame.

    1. That is a shame. My wee Lidl has never done them but the bigger one in town usually has them. You do have to be quick though!
