You say tomato...

Finally the tomatoes are ripening!  I was beginning to think I'd have pounds and pounds of green tomatoes to pick!  Our days are shortening and the temperatures are dropping so keeping all the tomatoes on the vine to ripen is looking less likely.  I added a few over ripe bananas to the base of the plants and finally they're going red!  These ones are Roma VF for making sauce.  They're very firm and heavy.  Apparently they have a low water content so making it perfect to process into sauces.

These are Moneymaker (bit bland) and Black Russian (lovely).  I'm just eating these in salads as they ripen.

I picked the last of the blueberries this week and a few figs from the back garden.  They're very yummy!  I've still got lettuce growing too.  Now we're into September it feels like the growing season is nearing an end.  I've still to harvest my Arran Victory and Cara potatoes from the plot.  I have 10 sweetcorn husks almost ready.  There are 8 pots of de Cayenne chillies in the polytunnel, all still very green.  I might need to pick them and try to redden them at home.  My onions are small but need to be lifted soon.

It's not been the most productive year for edibles I've ever had but then it's not been a normal year for me.  My home garden has more flowers than ever so I'm taking that as a positive. 🌸🌺

  1. Flowers feed your soul, even if you can't make soup with them :)

  2. We didn't do very well with tomatoes this year and the last plants at the allotment have developed blight. I pulled them up yesterday and will put them in the council green bin for disposal rather than on the compost. The council compost gets so hot it destroys the blight, I believe. We still have 5 potato plants to harvest, some runner beans, but not much else. I love Autumn but feel a bit sad that growing is coming to an end....

    1. So far blight has escaped us this year. I know what you mean about that autumnal feeling although I do love crisp mornings and wrapping up warmly for long walks :-)

  3. Excellent tomato harvest! My crop was abysmal (haven't figured out why) but a friend has been keeping me supplied as she has a glut! Wish we could grow figs here but the winters are too cold.

  4. Your figs look scrumptious. Our fig is tiny. As it had been kept indoors last winter we had a fig to eat ages ago. It's got more on it now that are a good size, but sadly not ripe yet.
Luckily there are people in our village that grow and sell fabulous tomatoes. I haven't got space for a greenhouse so I rely on them.

  5. The Roma look lovely! We too have been lucky and escaped the blight problem but have had scab on our potatoes and suffered with carrot root fly too. Our peaches are coming to an end now as the apples are beginning to ripen (Discovery first). The huge runner bean crop is just starting to tail off but chard, kale and summer cabbage continue as do the autumn fruiting rasps!
Hoping that you are keeping well and your sister is now much improved. Vicki

    1. I was short of time so just roasted them and froze them for now. I've loads of Black Russians ripening on the window now. Sounds like you've got a great harvest!

I'm feeling a lot better and my sister is on the mend finally. Thanks for asking! :-)

  6. We've had a brilliant tomato crop this year. At first I was disappointed as the first fruits weren't as sweet as usual and I blamed the cold June we had, however they have got better as the summer has gone on and I'm still picking loads. Our apples this year are amazing and huge and very sweet, now I've no idea what to do with them all! Flowers are a must too in the garden if for nothing else to cheer us up! x

    1. I agree that all the flowers are very cheering!! Sadly no apples from my trees (garden or plot) but my lovely mum gave me loads from hers! And they're huge too!
