More unpreparedness!

I've been unwell over the last few days 🙄  I had a nasty bout of vomiting all Friday night that left me depleted all weekend.  I'm just about back to normal today.  Pretty sure it wasn't a bug or something I ate as it's the second time in a month 😣  Without going into the gory details, I suspect it's acid reflux related due to stress and excess coffee drinking!!

And I was totally unprepared for it!!!  I had nothing with ginger (my usual sickness remedy) in it anywhere in the house.  No ginger ale, crystallised ginger, no dry crackers, no nux vomica (homeopathic remedy) or any antacid products.  I was on my own as my son and DIL were away for the weekend so I couldn't even ask someone to get stuff for me.  Another reminder of how I've let 'stuff' slip these past few months.

I spent most of the time lying on my bed with a pounding headache (caffeine withdrawal as well as dehydration!) and Luna discovered that she can jump on and off the bed by herself now.  So I had company!  She's breaking all my rules about not letting dogs on the furniture!!! 🙄

I'm tentatively eating small meals again and was delighted to find a couple of frozen meals in the freezer that I'd made for my Lovely Mum and forgot to take with me the last time I visited.  This is slow cooked chicken stew with veggies.  It really hit the spot!  I'll make more for mum but I got to test out cooking a meal from frozen in the new ready meal containers I bought.  I was impressed, they worked well.  I'm thinking I might meal prep some recovery meals for myself as well as my mum.  Trays from Amazon HERE

So, I need to get on with sorting out my 'stuff' starting with being prepared for vomiting and getting my first aid kit up to scratch (I also discovered I had no plasters!!)  I'm pretty stocked up for colds/flus/viruses but need some ideas for vomiting/acid reflux/heartburn.  I've ordered some organic crystalised ginger, so that's a start.  Any other suggestions?

  1. Hope you soon feel a lot better. It sounds nasty. Where di you get your ready meals trays, please?

    1. Thanks, it was pretty gruesome! I got these ones on Amazon. I've added the link in my post. They can be put in the dishwasher but I prefer to handwash them as from past experience some trays warp with repeated dishwasher use. They're holding up well after a few hot washes so far :-)

  2. Apple cider vinegar may help; that's a lovely photo of Luna :)

  3. Hello! Greetings from the Netherlands! I have been a silent reader for many years and have followed your journey with interest. I also quit my job a few months ago, downsized, and am living totally off my savings until I receive a small pension in 5 years time. I didn’t think it was possible until I started reading your blog (and a few others) - so thank you! A healthy (and cheap!) alternative to traditional antiacid and nausea medication is to eat a couple of table spoons of dry oats. It absorbs all the nasty acid and it works every time. Hope you feel better soon! Sylvia

    1. Hello and welcome! Thanks for following my journey, there have been many detours!! I didn't know oats were specifically good for reflux but I'm not surprised. They're a genuine superfood in my book! Thanks for the tip, definitely trying that one. I love that you're at a similar stage in life and get inspired by others too :-)

    2. Hello Ali. Thank you for your kind words. Please know that you alone are totally responsible for planting the seed of what could be possible for my life with planning, saving money where possible, and the dream that things could be different. I also had a very stressful job, with some health issues as a result. You (and your detours!) were a true inspiration and I often thought: if she can do it, so can I! And I didn’t half face the obstacles that you did! So please know that your blog has probably touched and inspired many. Hope the oats works for you. My lovely mum is 85 and suffers from chronic heartburn. She eats her main meal at lunch, a sandwich at 5pm and still suffers from reflux at night. She actually has a jar of dried oats by her bed which helps her have a good night’s sleep. This remedy was suggested by her health/social care worker whose job it is to check on elderly residents regularly in the Netherlands. Take care and I look forward to reading your posts navigating your future ongoing plans. Best, Sylvia

    3. Aww, thank you for making my day! :-) I've just found your comment. I'm so glad I have inspired you and hopefully a few others too. I was totally inspired by Vivi on YouTube. She was a nurse who had to give up work due her arthritic knees. She lives on a teeny tiny amount of money and grows most of her own food in London. I thought if she could do it, then so could I!!
So far the dried oats is doing the trick for me! :-)

  4. So sorry to hear you're poorly. Nasty bugs aside, pups are completely exhausting for the first few months - especially if they're unwell. Hope things improve soon.

    1. Thanks, feeling better today but the acid burping is driving me nuts!! My son in Australia is thinking of getting a pup. He already has a 4 yo Pug and wants another one. I've basically warned him it's rather hard going and don't do it!! :-)

  5. I'd be very interested to hear if you try the dried oats suggestion mentioned above - my OH suffers a lot from acid reflux.
Hope you are feeling better soon x

  8. I have never heard of Sylvia's suggestion before, but it sounds as if it would be well worth trying. Have you tried mint tea? That might help to prevent it flaring up.

    1. I've ordered some ginger ale in my next shopping delivery and I'll keep it in the storecupboard as I'm pretty sure there will be a next time. But I'm working on trying to resolve this without needing to see my GP :-)

  10. I use DGL deglycyhrizinated ( sp?) licorice powder in capsules. DGL has the component that can raise your blood pressure removed. The licorice makes your stomach produce more mucus which provides some protection from the acid. ACV & mint made hb worse for me. The dry oats sounds intriguing and I hope you write about it. Caffeine increases acid production in your stomach-but you probably already knew that, so even chocolate can be contraindicated. Also, avoiding tomatoes, vinegar, vinegar based pickles, and citrus helps me. Chewable calcium tablets also help. I’ve read that the aluminum based hb liquids like mylanta, here in the us, works fastest, but I am a little hesitant to use them, but am not sure if my hesitance has any basis in actual scientific fact as many medicines are helpful if taken judiciously but are poisonous/lethal when taken in too large of an amount. Good luck. I hope your stress reduces greatly very soon.

    1. Great tips, thanks! Interesting stuff re the liquorice as I have some mint and liquorice herbal tea that works on soothing the digestion. I know my caffeine habit is a factor so I'm cutting down even more. I had 2 tomato based meals on Friday and that was definitely a trigger!!!!! And yep, I need to work on reducing the stress! :-)

  12. Sorry to hear about your miserable time and hope you are feeling better by now. I've seen this advertised in Saga magazine. It's available on the NHS so I'm assuming they think it is worthwhile https://www.peptest.co.uk/iqoro-oral-device-treat-reflux/
Thankfully I don't suffer from reflux but a friend who does is investigating this device as an alternative to medication - aside from cream they've never identified a main cause for their reflux.

    God bless.

I suffered from severe acid reflux. ACV thins the guts. Pukka Aloe Vera Juice definitely helped heal me.
