54

In 100 days I will be 54.  I know this thanks to the memories thingy on FB when I posted about being 50.

At 54 I can ask for a full projection of my teacher's pension.  I could work out how feasible it would be to retire at 55.

Exciting and scary at the same time.  Could I?????

  1. Yes, I'm looking into tutoring. I've done a bit in the past. I live in an area where there are plenty of opportunities so I'm exploring that :-)

  2. Now is the time for you to plan your retirement, we started years before we stopped working, it made the transition much smoother. Your 10 years younger than me, 50's was a good decade.

    1. Yep, doing lots of research and planning. I want to have everything in place before I make the final decision :-)

  3. Ooh, go for it I say. If you can afford to retire early, and it's what you want, then do it.

    1. I think I can afford it and I def want to do it!! I already live on half my salary and use the other half to do work on my house and travel.

  4. Sad to say I had to work until 65 to get a full pension, and then continued with supply teaching for another 5 or 6 years. Finally retired fully at 71, when it no longer made sense financially, and haven't regretted that. I think you would need a strong retirement plan in place for what you are to do in your new found leisure time.

    1. I won't get a full teacher's pension as I've worked part time for many many years. And I don't get my state pension until I'm 67. But I have other assets that I could utilise. Def working on a strong plan! :-)

  5. I will have to work until I'm 67 but hopefully some of that will be part time. I'm a year older than you but my hubby is 5 years older than me so spending more time together makes sense to us.
If I could retire I would so go for it!

  6. I hope you can do it. I could have worked to 65, but planned to work until 62. Then just last year I couldn't take the commute any more, started looking at the figures and left in January of this year. I was just 60 but had to work that long because I got divorced and had to buy the ex out of the house. But I was smart enough to throw everything I had at my mortgage and that made leaving possible - and I don't regret it at all. Hope it pans out for you and have a lovely Christmas.
