RIP Ginger MarmaLady

I found Ginger curled up in the corner of the coop this morning.  She had died in her sleep.  It was exactly one year ago I rescued her from a commercial free range flock.  She was feisty, cheeky and friendly, always trying to come inside the house.  She had been a bit lethargic over the weekend but still came and ate her porridge yesterday morning.  She was only 2 and half years old.  That's not old for a chicken.

I will not be replacing her.  I've made the decision not to keep chickens any more although I'm still undecided about rehoming Tuppence and Penny.

Not a great start to my day.  RIP wee Ginger.

  1. So sad, however you know she had a good life whilst she was with you. X

    1. She would have been culled last year so she had an extra year trashing my garden! I wasn't too surprised when I found her as I had a feeling yesterday xxx

  5. Aww … they just go when it's their time don't they. There's no rhyme or reason sometimes, it's as though they just give up the will to live. I have one feeling just the same way at the moment. I hope the sun comes out today, it does seem to give them an incentive to stay alive for a while longer and she's a good girl, I'll be sad when she goes ... I've lost too many in the past year.

    RIP Ginger xx

    1. I examined her wee body and as far as I could tell (I am by no means an expert!) she wasn't egg bound or had a prolapse. They do just die sometimes. Hope your wee one holds on xxx

  6. Sorry to hear your sad news, I made the decision to sell my last 2 chickens last week as we are seeking a more simpler life and will be looking to have more breaks also in the future, and not have to ask family to look after them although it would be no bother. It was really hard for me but they went to a really good home.

    1. Thanks. I'm going to try confining them to their run (which is actually a decent size!) and see how they get on. I'll add some enrichment activities for them. If they're unhappy then I'll rehome them
