Day 8 - In black and white

I had to wait in today for 2 separate deliveries.  I knitted more of my sock, watched some YouTube videos and played around with some Travel Scrabble tiles I rescued from my late uncle's house.  I love the effect of the tiles, just not sure about the green background.

I have 2 wee boards so made 2 different ones.  This Oscar Wilde quote made me smile!!  I'm thinking I might paint the green background black to fit in with my collection.

I've been collecting black framed pictures, sayings and photos (I have more than these!) to decorate the white walls on my stairs.  I've had an idea in my head for ages but then I saw it on a TV programme this week.

This screen shot is from the opening credits of the new series of Scotland's Home of the Year (available on BBC iPlayer if you're in the UK)  This is exactly the effect I'm going for.  On a budget, obviously!  I've been gathering and painting old frames with black chalk paint and varnishing them with glitter varnish (as you do!)  I see in the picture there's a few gold ones dotted around.  I might copy that idea too as I have a few gold coloured frames already.

  1. My stairway looks just like this but it's all photos of the family at various stages. Everyone loves it, it's like having a photo album open to look at. I have all different shapes and sizes of frames, most of them were the frameless type but I'm now intent on trying to get them into nicer frames. I've been buying one or two in Tesco each time I'm in. Yours will look fab with all the lovely colours you have. I should warn you, you need a lot of wee nails and when you want to paint the wall again, there's a lot of holes!! Just as well I don't decorate very often! x

  2. When we were still living in our townhouse, I did this very thing on our stair landing and up the stairs, only the pictures were ones we framed from our various trips or were bought at various location. All had black frames and the walls were white. Most of them had dark hues and some of them were just painted black on white backgrounds. It looked really nice. Now we live in a 1 level home with unfinished basement and the only stairs go up to the attic, also not finished so several of these pictures now hang in different locations through out the house. I can't wait to see how yours turns out. Ranee (MN)

    1. I found I had a growing pile of mismatched things from my previous house and thought if they all had the same colour of frame they might work together. Seeing that TV clip has re motivated me to have a go! xxx

  3. My new home is very tasteful cream - everywhere! Very un-me (or so I thought) and my first instinct was to reach for the paintbrushes. However, I've been collecting up things to hang, and hope to achieve something like the effect in the photo - all over the house - there is a huge amount of wall space. It will be a much more mixed and random assortment as it arrives or is made, but each piece will have a story. I've just been reading John's (Going Gently blog) post about his art wall. The universe aligns again for those who are ready to accept :)
Looking forward to seeing your progress :) x

    1. I started painting my walls white as I was thinking ahead to selling the house. But turns out I quite like it as a background to my colourful stuff!! I just checked out John's post and agree with him that each piece means something. Can't wait to see yours too xxx

  4. Forgot to say - it will stay cream as a foil to the proposed riot of colour!

  5. Great idea to create a visual link with the black frames - unless you have the green somewhere else in the room, I'd go for a neutral colour for the background or perhaps gold? Have you tried Command strips to hang pictures? Definitely not frugal but very strong and don't leave marks when removed. Vicki

  6. I would spray-paint the boards.. to get a more even finish? I've seen that home prog but can't be doing with the judges. Love the idea of the gold and black combo of frames, good luck, Gillian

    1. Thanks! If I'd thought about it I should have spray painted them but I jumped straight in. They look ok though!
