Woodburner saga

Well, the excitement of getting my woodburner installed has well and truly worn off.  This is what it looks like at the moment.  I have to wait a few more weeks before the next stage.  Removing the stone fireplace and knocking out a larger opening created a huge mess of dust throughout the whole house 😞 I did get an apology for the mess but that doesn't undo it.  A larger area of the walls will need replastered than originally thought.

Then I found out my chimney failed the smoke test so it needs to be lined (this is a legal requirement)  at an extra cost of £775 😢 So the original verbal quote of around £2000 has gradually crept up and now stands at just over £4000.  That's just for the woodburner.  I need a new carpet and obviously will need to repaint.  I have savings that were earmarked for other projects that will need to wait until next year.

Ah well, everything will work out in the end.  I hope.

  1. Frustrating, expensive and messy but it will be worth it in the end when you're sitting toasting your feet. X

    1. I know, it's just the bit between now and then that's frustrating!

  2. Life goes like that sometimes but once the dist has settles (in more than one way), you will love it so much.

  3. Focus on the result, cosy winter evenings. Why so often does the jobs go differently than expected, when asking for costing they should be able to check if other work needs to be done. We recently had to pay more than expected on engine work on our camper van, when I asked why did you not realise this would have to be done, he just sucked air through his teeth and shook his head. There is never any doubt the extra work will be done, but it would be nice for estimates to be closer to the amount paid.

    1. Why bother with estimates if they're never close to the real cost?? Really annoying

  4. When we had our woodburner installed, the metal tube from the wood burner, rose up and out the chimney pot on the roof. The whole chimney was then backfilled with ceramic heat resistant balls, so can't get my head around why you need your chimney lining?

    1. New regulations I think. In my previous house I didn't need a liner and the house was much older than this one

  5. As others have said, it will all be worth it in the end!
I'd love a wood burner but the initial cost puts me off to be honest - one day though I will do it.

    1. If I had known it would cost £4000 upfront I don't think I would have gone ahead. I certainly would have thought twice about it

  6. I wanted a wood burner but hubby wouldn't have it. He said they are messy and throw out sparks etc and make a right mess in front of them (his friend has one and it has to be said it does always look a bit messy in front of it) However, I had no idea it would cost as much as £4000 to get one installed!! Thats a nightmare. I had heard that you sometimes have to get your chimney lined which as you have found out is more expense. I'm sure you'll love it all once its done though and you can let me know if its messy etc so I can use it as evidence to hubby lol.

    1. They shouldn't throw sparks out if your wood is dry and the door should be closed anyway. Maybe the mess is from his friend not cleaning up when he empties the ash pan, so that's a housekeeping issue ;-)

  7. Oh goodness what a nightmare! It will all be worth it once you are able to heat your home without central heating though, just need to find yourself a free supply of wood. I used to skip dive at a nearby factory who had lots of wooden pallets they had to pay to dispose of. One reciprocating saw and I could demolish a pile of pallets into firewood in an afternoon!

  8. It will all be worth it in the end but I imagine that doesn't ease your frustration at the moment. Can't wait to see photos when it's all finished thought I bet it will be beautiful :)
