Unexpected savings

We popped into Sainsbury's on the way back from the gym and I got some reduced gluten free stuff.  I don't buy them very often as they're too expensive but when they're reduced it's worth the savings.  This lot will do me for a few weeks 😊

Remember that pay rise Scottish teachers were getting?  My council decided to pay us our backdated rise in this month's salary, even though the vote to accept the payrise only closed today (98% voted to accept!!)  So I got paid an unexpected extra £676.28!  I've already transferred that amount into my savings account and each month will transfer the increase as well.  I already live well on half my salary so hopefully the extra amount each month will boost my retirement fund.

Just 2 more days to hang on!

  1. Good haul at Sainsburys. The council must have unspent money in the budget which they want to use before 31st March so good result for the teachers! Well done you for saving it-I never believed I could live on half my salary until I decided to retire and then I devloped a whole different mind set. Enjoy your break-you’ll be more than ready for it.

    1. Whatever the reason, I'm glad it's in my savings account and not the council's account!! I'm already fighting off a bug but can last one more day

  2. Fab going there!! Are you in the TPS? If so, is it not worth putting that increase into that rather than savings? My now retired head of department did that and it made a big difference for a small amount.
I bet you'll have considered this already knowing your savviness!!!

    1. It's the SSPA in Scotland. At my age it's not worth putting extra money into it. The financial advisor from my union came to speak us last year and basically it was too late for a lot of us ladies of a certain age who worked part time for many years.

  3. Anything special planned for this weekend, Ali? I would be out on the town but then I am a bit of a spendthrift.

  5. Hi again, I just returned from a month in Sydney to visit my son. It was wonderful but nice to be home (sort of!) Sounds like you've been busy since I was last here and a happy birthday to you for last weekend. I love your purple hair, I hope your scalp is healing nicely, did you return to the hairdresser to tell her your hair wasn't quite right? Its usually a lot of money to spend so it should have been perfect!! Good for you getting that pay rise, we also got a lovely surprise on our return home. On the spur of the moment (and in an effort to offset some costs of going to Australia) I used The Moneysaving Experts form to apply for ppi a couple of weeks before we left. On our return we got a cheque for £2000!! I don't even remember having loans with the bank but I'll take it! Happy days. Enjoy your Easter break, hopefully the weather will be kind to us, I need to get planting in the garden asap! x

    1. I know what you mean about it being nice to be home again. And what a fab windfall to get :-)

I didn't go back to the hairdresser as it healed quickly. I'm still not happy about the yellowness (it shines through the purple in places)

I hope the weather is good as I really want to sort out my garden!
