This was my polytunnel this morning. I'm really not happy with what's (not) growing this year despite my careful watering and feeding since I planted my tomatoes and peppers. Definitely having a re think for next year.
What do you or would you grow instead of tomatoes? 🍅
Are the pollinators getting in? That's really disappointing. Have you grown tomatoes and peppers in there previously?
ReplyDeleteYes I've seen lots of bees etc in there, I'd leave the door open. I've successfully grown tomatoes and chillies in there for the last 2 years. Maybe it's just one of those years!
DeleteI always blame the weather! But there's always next year and a different variety may do better
ReplyDeleteI've grown Roma for 2 years and always got loads. The Amish Paste and Aurora are new to me, both heritage varieties from Real Seeds as I wanted to save some seeds. Yeah, there's always next year but def going to do something different in there
DeleteHmm. I don't know what you could plant instead. I don't blame you for being disappointed.
DeleteGod bless.
Just from my own experience ... but that was never as far North as Stirling ... I would start to take off a lot of the foliage from the tomato plants to let the plant put all it's energy into the fruits now and improve air flow around them. Also pull out that one that has died and gone yellow. Also cut back slightly (or eat) the Nasturtiums that are nearest the bases of the tomato plants.
ReplyDeleteBut it's not necessarily anything that you have done wrong, it's been a very hit and miss year for fruits and vegetables, the heat/cold and dry/wet have just been too extreme and sporadic. I think we will all be trying again with some things next year and completely giving up on others.
I was thinking about stripping the lower leaves but don't usually do it until later in the month. Might as well try it now!
DeleteI'm new to veggie and fruit gardening, was told to grow what you eat, this was the second year i started plants from seeds, they say grow what you eat so i tried my hand at kale, bush bean, zucchini, spaghetti squash and i tried pumpkin as i like it in soups, an eye opener, things went really well to start, but at this point i know what i'll try next year, i planted 4 zucchini plants and only harvested 4 of them, i had 5 spaghetti squash but the other day i think a bear got to them and found only chewed up bits, i think i'll put more effort into adding compost and manure, my kale is still coming but i'm having to deal with aphids and it's really dry and hot here in BC, Canada at the moment, but i do understand when you put so much effort and care and it just doesn't happen, i tried cherry tomatoes this year and though the fruit is small it's very sweet, i couldn't find jalepeno peppers to grow so did without, but hey, always next year, love watching and seeing your adventures on your allotment, Tory
