EDITED: Jury duty!!

Edited cos I'm an idiot! See photo at end.  I've always been terrible at matching days with dates.  Apparently I do it with months as well!!! 🙄🙄🙄

I got a letter on Saturday telling me I've been called for jury duty, starting on Wednesday this week!!  That's not much notice!  I've had to book Luna into daycare for the extra days just in case I'm selected and I'm pretty sure doggy daycare costs aren't refunded in expenses.  And it's not a valid excuse for excusal!

You phone a recorded message the night before to see if you're still needed.  Fingers crossed then! 🤞

I'm so annoyed as I had nice plans this week with my mum and aunt that are now hanging in the balance.  But if I get selected that will be my civic duty done for the next 10 years!!

  1. How annoying, and very short notice! I've done 3 lots of jury duty - the amount of time just sat around in the waiting room was a pain in the bum and a complete waste of time, in my opinion. At least I'd be able to get out of it now (being my husband's carer) if I had the misfortune to be called again. A friend of mine who was called at the same time as me sent a letter stating baldly that she wasn't doing it and that was that! And amazingly, she got away with it!

    1. I've been called once before many years ago. I remember hanging around all day doing nothing (pre phones with wifi) so I'll go prepared this time :-) xxx

  2. I was cited in the May before I retired in the August. I asked to be excused as we were decanting into temporary premises for the next two years and explained it all. I was excused and told I would be resummoned which happened the next March at Glasgow High Court. In the first trial I knew the person who had been wronged so was told to go away and come back later. This went on for three days with lots of reasons why the next trial couldn’t start. Eventually because we had been messed about so much, we were excused for five years! I was then summoned to the local court about 6 years ago and knew the defence lawyer having minded him when he was a wean living next door. He objected and I was once again excused! I am now 74 so will never need to take part in a jury again. I think you should pursue the cost of doggy day care after all you can’t leave Luna at home alone. Fingers crossed you don’t get picked. 1. I'll def ask but have my doubts. It's the hanging around nonsense that's so annoying isn't it? :-) xxx

  4. I got out of it by declaring myself deaf in one ear. True. I gave them permission to seek confirmation from my doctors records. No point in sitting there and not being able to hear every word. They let me off.

    1. Brilliant! Sadly I can't think of any medical reason they'd let me off :-) xxx

  5. That's ridiculously short notice. How on earth do they expect people who are working to cope with that? I suspect doggy day care isn't covered. I used to have to get people to attend court as witnesses. The expenses they could claim for going to court used to be very stingy and I don't expect they are brilliant now for witnesses or jurors.

    1. At first I thought it was October but nope. And it's addressed to my new address so hasn't been delayed by redirection. I'll be out of pocket by £32 for a day's doggy daycare plus parking charges for the town centre are ridiculous. Hope I at least get a lunch voucher but will take a snack or 2 plus a travel mug of coffee plus a book to read! :-) xxx

  7. Oops 😳 I bet you're happy about your misread. At least you've a decent amount of time to prepare.

  8. I got the letter, and told them how much I would like to attend. I checked the nearest parking and for any steep hills or stairs.
I recorded all of my medical problems, and practical issues, not being able to sit for very long, fatigue from the meds, the d&v they caused.
They said they could manage without me, and wouldn’t ask again.
    I was a bit disappointed.

    1. I don't have any issues with actually doing jury duty, it's the hanging around for hours/days that's a nuisance! :-) xxx

  9. Ok, this was a bit confusing at first, but now I understand - you're actually called for November! I've so far never been called for jury duty; I watch a lot of Law and Order etc., but I just don't know how I would do at it. Good luck when the time comes!

    1. It's just the local Sherriff court which deals with 'minor' crimes so I doubt it'll be as exciting as Law and Order!! :-) xxx

  10. Easily done, especially if the mis-read is a shock. I am so glad it's not this coming Wednesday. xx

  11. I was selected for Jury duty but was also doing my PGCE and was on placement. Luckily, they let me off.

    1. I've been let off once before as I had a holiday booked. I don't mind doing it, just the hanging around doing nothing is annoying :-) xxx

  12. At least you have a while to get used to the idea. I have never done jury duty but Alan was called a few years ago, although he never got to actually sit in court. He was just sat waiting around, working on his computer in the waiting area for three days and then they were all excused.

    1. They do seem to call many more people than they need but then what do I know about the Scottish court system?! Lol! :-) xx
