Home grown meal

My first complete zero miles meal this year.  Home grown potatoes, peas, lettuces, carrots and white turnips with this week's single egg from lone chicken Penny.  I have to confess I'm feeling very disillusioned with my garden this year.  The constant wet weather interspersed with mini heatwaves has caused lots of things to run to seed instead of producing vegetables.  And yet my tomatoes in the polytunnel haven't even flowered yet!

I need to have a long hard think about how I'm going forward with my plans.

  1. That looks wonderful and I'm sure it tasted lovely, too. I haven't had a home cooked meal in almost eight weeks as my small kitchen has been under renovation...Don't give up on the garden just yet!

    1. It was simple but so tasty! Renovations are so disruptive, hope everything gets finished soon.

  3. Growing and cooking/catering for one has been a huge learning curve for me, just only getting to grips with it. Getting lots from the garden luckily. Sometimes wonder if all the effort is worth it just for me, but I can't stop the growing.

  4. Its a shame your veg hasn't produced much. Mine has been ok so far. Most of my tomatoes are in an unheated greenhouse and are doing well now. Maybe you got a dud lot of seeds? Also I grew my lettuce in the greenhouse until I needed the space to plant the tomatoes on and planted the lettuce outside in big clumps in a raised bed and some tubs. Its been fabulous all summer I'm definitely going to do the same next year. Its cut and come again I plant now, I find it easier to use and it doesn't go to seed as quick. Maybe the weather will pick up - it usually does when the schools go back (sorry!!) and your veg will cheer up! Looks good what you got so far though. Good luck. x

  5. Agree the cut and come again lettuce is best for our climate. I hadn't thought about my tomato seeds being duds. I only planted one variety (Roma) and have got 18 plants. None of them are in flower yet!

It's a sure bet the weather will improve once I'm back at work!! :-)
