Yikes!!

You know that saying that goes along the lines of when you makes plans God/the universe laughs?

I dropped Emma at the vet this morning for some tests and a biopsy this morning.  She has a very large lump on her tummy that needs looked at plus she needs her ears cleared out again.  Both procedures will done under general anaesthetic.  This was a planned event so I knew it would be costly.  However when the vet casually said this morning it would be around the £1200 mark I actually gasped and said yikes!!  She had her ears cleared out 2 years ago and it was just over £350 so I was expecting the extra tests to add a bit more.  But not more than triple the cost!!!  Oh and did I mention she's not insured??  There goes that £1500 I have in my savings!  She's totally worth it though 💖

Since I was in town any way I popped into M&S as I had £11 in vouchers.  Lots of veg was reduced.  I got potatoes, 2 cauliflowers, red cabbage, 3 peppers, bag of apples, bag of pears, onions, cashew nuts and a tub of soya yoghurt.  Total cost £11.38, so only actually spent 38p.  I'll do some cooking today to keep me busy and make enough meals to see me through the week as I'm back at school tomorrow.

I'll collect Emma after 4pm.  Poor wee soul 🐶

Edit:  She's fine but groggy.  Results in 2 weeks.  Cost £1038 in the end

  1. Hope Emma is OK, we do love our pets, vet bills have rocketed in the past years, these days there is so much more they can do for our animals.

    1. Yep I've noticed a huge increase in vet costs. It cost me £83 last month for her ear drops and cleaner, used to be around the £30 mark. Labs are prone to recurring ear issues and poor Emma is the only one I've had with ear problems

  2. Oh, my gosh, that is a lot of money! Thank goodness you have savings. How do people managed if they don't, I wonder?

    1. I guess if I didn't have those savings I'd have to put it on my credit card and pay it off over the next few months. Having pets is fast becoming a luxury!

  3. It costs a fortune just to walk through the door of the vet now! I do have insurance but it doesn't cover much! We've to get our dogs teeth cleaned this month and having read your cost I'm worried we may be in the same league! EEK.

    1. I used to have insurance for both dogs but it was creeping closer and closer to £100 a month PER DOG! And as you say, it didn't actually cover much so I was still paying for boosters and flea/tick treatment. And I think I had to pay the first £100 of any 'other' treatment as well so it just wasn't cost effective.

Brace yourself for the cost of teeth cleaning!!

  4. Blimey, that's huge! But as you say, we'd do anything for our pets, they're much loved members of the family. We have Betty insured as SharPeis and Bulldogs (she's a mix of both) can be prone to various health issues. We still have to pay for her recurring ear infections though, as it's not covered by the insurance. Hope Emma's lump isn't anything too serious! x

    1. Fingers crossed it's just a fatty lump. She's feeling very sorry for herself!

  5. Sorry to hear about your vet bill - that's a bit of a blow, for sure! You did well at M&S - we don't get vouchers here but I collect points and used $10 worth today on my special coffee. FYI the schools here are closed for two weeks to try to get the infections down - 1600 new cases in Ontario today!

    1. Cases are rising rapidly here, I have 5 kids off today. 2 confirmed positive. But the government is determined that schools will stay open "at all costs" My son and his girlfriend are unwell and went for a PCR test today. If either one is positive I have to self isolate and be off work because we're all in one household.

  6. I am glad that Emma is home, and I hope the results are good from the tests on the lump.

    God bless.

    1. She's doing well today. I'll just have to wait 2 weeks for the biopsy results
