Accidental collection!

The 2 green plates in the photo were rescued from my hoarder uncle's house when we cleared it out in 2020.  They were obviously my Gran's and I just loved them.  They're Carlton Ware circa 1950s, maybe a bit earlier according to my research.  I had them displayed in the dining room of my old house and my DIL loved them too.

Last week she found a teapot, sugar bowl and salt/pepper set in a charity shop and messaged me.  They were £12 for the set and she wondered if I'd like them.  I said "get them!" and now I'm kinda collecting them! 😂😂😂

I spent some time last night researching the patterns.  It's Carlton Ware Australian Design on a green background and the flower designs are Primula and Wild Rose.  The surface and flowers are raised.  They were made in green, yellow and white and have different flower designs.  If you look at the salt and pepper set they are actually the Foxglove design.  They're not particularly valuable although a similar teapot and sugar bowl is for sale on Etsy for £45.  I like them because they connect me to my Gran and I do think they're pretty.

So today my DIL was in a charity shop and saw this!!

It looks like a bonbon dish!  The label said £5 x 2 but the second item couldn't be found.  So she paid £2.50 for it!!

So the collection is already growing! 😁  I have no idea how to display them and I do want to use them (carefully!!) so any suggestions welcome!

  2. They are absolutely beautiful. Maybe a special shelf in your kitchen, that way you can actually use them if you want to but they will be up high away from Luna and any doggy mishaps. The only truly delicate item would be the teapot if you were to put boiling water into it.

    1. I was thinking about a shelf somewhere they couldn't be bumped!! I don't think the teapot has been used as it's very clean and unstained looking inside :-) xxx

    2. I have a lot of Carltonware in my attic, mainly bought for a few pounds from car boot sales many years ago. It looked wonderful on shelves in the Victorian house where I used to live. I see quite a lot of it in charity shops these days so your collection could grow quickly .....!

  3. I have 2 little double leafed jam dishes similar to this pattern of Carlton Ware - rescued from Mum's house when it was cleared. She probably would have had them for Wedding Presents - early 1950s. They have Apple Blossom flowers and one green back ground and one yellow. I keep them but never use them which is silly really.

    1. The Apple Blossom ones are so pretty too. I've been looking at some on Etsy tonight and a lot of them are advertised as Primula when they're actually Apple Blossom or Wild Rose. You should use yours next time you have scones :-) xxx

  4. Well, that set me off down a rabbit hole. I have two pieces of Carlton Ware, they were one of my parents wedding presents in 1939. I have a grapefruit reamer with a buttercup on the handle and a leaf bowl similar to yours. Both are yellow and the bowl has an apple blossom design. I seem to think we also had a large bowl for fruit. I’m off to research hubby’s gran’s china with a plum autumn fruit design, as we have several pieces. I keep my special bits of china such as these in a china cabinet, mostly at eye level so I can see them and not have to dust them!

    1. Lol!! I know that rabbit hole well! I'd love a special china cabinet but sadly don't have room for one. My mum had my gran's cabinet but it was very fragile and the glass was dangerous so she got rid of it. I do need to think about I'm going to display/store my 'collection' :-) xxx

  5. I have a collection of Carlton ware plates displayed on our kitchen walls. They're all from op shops (charity shops) so if any of them fell down it wouldn't be the end of the world. Hopefully that won't happen!

    1. Plates would be easy to put on a wall but I have other pieces too. I'm thinking a display shelf of some sort, maybe? :-) xxx

  6. Aren’t they pretty. I often see pieces in charity shops so be encouraged that you will find more so you may need to make space for a small display cabinet or wall thingamy! Jan in Castle Gresley

  7. Took me right back to my Gran’s house in the 1950s. They are very pretty and such an inexpensive way to start a collection. Catriona

    1. I don't mind spending a few pounds but I'm not paying a premium for a 'collectors item' as they seem to be described on Etsy :-) xxx

  8. Carlton wear is so pretty. I collect vases, not intentional but I have so many it has become a collection. They are displayed but I now have no more space so it has to be pretty special for me to buy one.

  10. Those are charming, so pretty. I do love old china but sadly have very little room here to display it. In order to display what I have and collect I rotate it on my dresser through the four seasons of the year. The rest is safely stored under the spare bed. All well here, hope you are too, and that you are enjoying your new home. Oddny xx

    1. Rotating it is a great idea! Might need to do that if I get too many! I'm slowly settling in and getting things done :-) xxx
